Portable Endoscopy Light Source 10W
What it is
A compact, rechargeable 10W LED light source unit designed to power rigid endoscopes and sinuscopes via a standard fiber optic light guide cable. The unit is cordless during use — charged via USB — making it portable and suitable for OPD, clinic, and remote settings where a fixed light tower is not installed. It accepts standard fiber optic light guide connections and is compatible with the range of ENT sinuscopes and rigid endoscopes.
When & how it's used
Used as the illumination source for rigid sinuscopes, otoscopes, and endoscopes in ENT outpatient and clinic settings where a fixed, wall-mounted light tower is unavailable. Particularly useful for diagnostic nasal endoscopy in OPD, mobile clinic setups, and teaching sessions away from the main theatre. At 10W, it provides sufficient illumination for diagnostic work and clinic procedures.

View on Netcare Instruments ↗The 10W portable light source fills the gap between the entry-level LED torch and the 100W–120W professional theatre units. At 10W, it delivers meaningful clinical illumination for diagnostic nasal endoscopy in the outpatient clinic — sufficient to visualise the nasal cavity, middle meatus, and nasopharynx through a 4mm sinuscope with adequate brightness for the monitor image. It is not designed to replace a full theatre light tower for prolonged operative FESS, where higher output (100W–120W) is needed to maintain brightness throughout a procedure, but it is entirely appropriate for the five to ten minute diagnostic examinations performed in clinic.
The cordless, rechargeable design is the key practical advantage: the unit can be picked up, moved between consultation rooms, taken to a ward, or used in a community setting without requiring mains power at the point of use. USB charging is convenient and does not require proprietary chargers. For clinics purchasing a sinuscope setup for the first time, the 10W unit provides a cost-effective entry point into endoscopic visualisation without the cost or installation requirements of a fixed light tower.
Design features
- 10W LED light output: Clinically adequate illumination for diagnostic nasal endoscopy and OPD procedures.
- Rechargeable, cordless operation: USB charging; no mains power required during use — portable between rooms and settings.
- Standard fiber optic light cable port: Compatible with all standard light guide connectors; connects to ENT sinuscopes and endoscopes via a fiber optic cable.
- Compact form factor: Small footprint on the examination trolley; easily transported.
- LED lifespan: Long-life LED element eliminates bulb replacement cost associated with xenon and halogen units.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a 10W light source sufficient for surgical FESS in theatre? For diagnostic nasal endoscopy in clinic, yes. For operative FESS in theatre — where the procedure may last 60–120 minutes, multiple scopes are used, and the monitor brightness needs to remain consistent throughout — a 100W or 120W unit is recommended. The 10W unit may show reduced brightness on the monitor image compared to a full theatre unit.
What type of fiber optic cable is needed? A standard 4.5mm fiber optic light guide cable with compatible connectors for both the light source port and the sinuscope light port. The fiber optic light cable (4.5mm) available separately in the Netcare range is compatible with this unit.
How long does the battery last on a full charge? Battery duration depends on usage pattern. At continuous maximum brightness, a full charge typically provides sufficient duration for a standard clinic session. The unit should be charged between clinic sessions or overnight. Specific run-time figures should be confirmed with the product datasheet.
What is the difference between this unit and the portable LED torch? The portable LED torch is an entry-level, simpler unit for basic illumination. The 10W unit provides a more clinically calibrated light output with a standard fiber optic port, suitable for regular outpatient diagnostic endoscopy. The 10W unit is the recommended choice for departments establishing a formal clinic endoscopy setup without a fixed tower.
